Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello Opens Up on Possible Return to Ogun Politics
Support for Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello is emerging in Abeokuta, where billboards bearing her image have appeared ahead of the 2027 elections. The billboards, erected by her supporters, signal a push for the former Ogun Central senator and ex-Commissioner for Health to consider a political comeback, though she has clarified she is not actively seeking office.
Now an Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Obasanjo-Bello explained that while she has allowed her supporters to continue with the billboards, her focus remains on teaching and mentorship in the United States. “I live a good life in the US. I teach at the university, and I am fine,” she said, noting that the initiative was carried out out of admiration for her past political work.
The billboards, prominently displayed in locations such as Abiola Way near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke Mosan, and Brewery Junction, carry messages emphasizing her connection to Ogun State and her track record in leadership. Obasanjo-Bello stressed that the decision to pursue any political role in 2027 ultimately rests with God and her supporters.
Highlighting her deep roots in Remo land, Obasanjo-Bello noted her traditional title of Iyalode of Ode Remo, bestowed on her by the late Alaye of Ode Remo, Oba Funso Adeolu. She also honored Chief Mrs. Gloria Shoda, describing her as “a formidable woman who has led at various times” during the latter’s 70th birthday celebrations in Sagamu.
Obasanjo-Bello’s political history includes serving as Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007 and as senator for Ogun Central between 2007 and 2011. She lost her re-election bid in 2011 and subsequently relocated to the United States. While speculation continues that she may run again in 2027, possibly under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), party officials say they are awaiting her outreach to hold discussions.
