Jigawa Council Builds 3km Flood Tunnel to Protect Communities

Hadejia Local Government Council in Jigawa State has launched a major infrastructure project aimed at curbing seasonal flooding in the area.

The council has begun constructing a three-kilometer tunnel to channel excess water from Jaribola Pond into the River Hadejia, providing relief to flood-prone communities.

Council Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Abba-Ari, inaugurated the project, valued at approximately N60 million, in Hadejia on Friday.

He described the initiative as part of the council’s long-term plan to protect lives, farmlands, and local markets from the devastating effects of recurring floods.

“Annual flooding has destroyed farmlands, displaced families, and disrupted livelihoods. This tunnel project will help manage water levels effectively and reduce the impact of seasonal floods,” Abba-Ari said.

Muhammad Talaki, the council’s Information Officer, confirmed that the project is expected to significantly improve water management in the area. Alhaji Muhammad Ubale, Head of Works Department, expressed confidence that the construction company would deliver the project according to the agreed contractual terms.

A tunnel is an underground passageway, usually fully enclosed except for entry and exit points, designed to facilitate the movement of water, vehicles, or pedestrians. In this case, the tunnel will serve as a canal to redirect floodwater safely into the River Hadejia.

Flooding has been a persistent challenge in Jigawa State, with heavy rains and overflowing rivers displacing thousands in recent years.

Local authorities hope that this project will provide a sustainable solution to the recurrent flood disasters.
