Jumoke Odetola Slams Critics Over Backlash to Hilda Baci’s Jollof Cook-Off.
Nollywood actress Jumoke Odetola has risen in defense of Nigerian chef Hilda Baci after her recent cook-off sparked mixed reactions online.
Hilda, who gained international recognition two years ago with her marathon cooking record, once again made headlines after shutting down Eko Hotel in Lagos with what was described as the biggest pot of Jollof rice ever cooked.
The event was graced by several notable figures, including Funke Akindele, Enioluwa, Tomike, Pastor Idowu, and Bamidele Abiodun, wife of the Ogun State Governor.
While many praised her, some critics took to social media to mock the taste of the food, questioning whether cooking should even count as an achievement.
Reacting in a heartfelt Instagram post, Jumoke Odetola expressed disappointment, saying it was “heartbreaking” that negativity often drowns out great accomplishments. She noted that her timeline had been flooded with comments belittling Hilda’s success and asked why people feel triggered by the achievements of others.
“The Jollof rice no sweet. I have been angry since yesterday, and if I don’t express my thoughts, I won’t be fine. It is heartbreaking when negativity overshadows greatness,” she wrote, adding that success requires mental, emotional, financial, and psychological strength.
Challenging the critics, Jumoke urged them to reflect deeply: “Now ask yourself honestly, why am I triggered by the success of a woman trying to make a mark in her field?”
She prayed for peace and healing for those harboring bitterness, saying true growth comes from celebrating, not tearing down, the wins of others.
