Justice Liman Steps Away from Sowore Case, Labels Police Action ‘Illegal’ as IGP Egbetokun’s Team Defies AGF Directive
Justice Mohammed Liman has reportedly declined to continue presiding over the case filed by the Nigeria Police Force, led by Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, against human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
The judge’s refusal comes amid growing legal controversy surrounding the legitimacy of the case. Sources close to the court said Justice Liman described the proceedings as “illegal,” citing procedural violations and a lack of proper authorization from the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).
Despite clear instructions from the AGF directing the police to withdraw the case file, officers under IGP Egbetokun allegedly defied the directive and insisted on pursuing the charges.
The police also reportedly ignored repeated warnings from the Ministry of Justice regarding due process.
The development has sparked concerns over the rule of law, with legal analysts criticizing the police for undermining judicial oversight and flouting constitutional channels. It remains unclear if a new judge will be assigned or if the case will be dismissed altogether.
