Kaduna Cleric Hails Historic Win of New York’s First Muslim Mayor

Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has congratulated Zohran Mamdani on becoming New York City’s first Muslim mayor and expressed optimism that a Muslim will eventually hold the presidency of the United States.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat, made history after defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in the mayoral race, marking a milestone for Muslim representation in U.S. politics.

Reacting to the victory on his verified Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi hailed the milestone as a sign of progress for the global Muslim community. He wrote:
“Mamdani has made it! ICU in Washington should be ready for heart attacks! Muslims will make it to the White House.”

The statement sparked mixed reactions online. While some praised his optimism and celebrated the historic win, others criticised the tone of his remarks.

Sheikh Gumi’s comments underscore the growing visibility and political engagement of Muslims worldwide, with Mamdani’s victory symbolizing a breakthrough in U.S. municipal politics.
