Kano Community Cries Out Over Escalating Bandit Attacks, Seeks Urgent Federal Intervention

The Farin-Ruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State has raised alarm over increasing bandit attacks allegedly perpetrated by criminals crossing over from neighbouring Katsina State.

During a press conference in Kano on Thursday evening, the community leader and chairman of the security committee, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, appealed to both the Federal and Kano State Governments to intervene swiftly to end the persistent violence.

Bagobiri lamented that the repeated assaults on Farin-Ruwa and surrounding villages including Kuraku, Gorantuse, Saure, and Shadu had claimed several lives and led to the loss of property and livestock. According to him, over 1,600 cows and numerous valuables have been stolen, with residents fleeing their homes for safety.

He revealed that during the latest attacks, the bandits, numbering in dozens and riding on about 50 motorcycles, stormed the area, killing and injuring residents while carting away more animals. He further disclosed that one victim recently paid a ₦15 million ransom to regain freedom from his abductors.

Bagobiri called on President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to take decisive action, stressing that the security personnel stationed in the area are grossly inadequate. He also urged lawmakers representing the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency to intensify their efforts in tackling the worsening insecurity.

The community leader expressed concern that the bandits now operate freely at any time of the day, leaving residents in constant fear. He emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and security agencies to curb the wave of attacks and restore peace to the affected communities.

Earlier in October, the Kano State Police Command arrested a suspect, Usman Lawan Baba, also known as “Yellow,” in connection with several kidnapping and armed robbery cases, including the abduction of the Village Head of Garun Babba in 2023.
