Kano Governor Launches Distribution of 5.5 Million Tree Seedlings to Combat Desert Encroachment
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has launched a major initiative to fight desert encroachment by distributing 5.5 million tree seedlings across all 44 local government areas in the state.
The flag-off ceremony took place at the historic Yanbawa Shelter Belt in Makoda Local Government Area one of Kano’s oldest natural defenses against desertification.
The governor emphasized the importance of tree planting as a vital environmental intervention to restore ecosystems, combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
He noted that tree nurseries in the state, previously neglected have been rehabilitated to support large-scale planting including nurseries in Mai Nikka (Gwarzo LGA) and Kafinciri (Garko LGA).
Under the administration’s directive local government chairmen have been ordered to establish Tree Planting Committees and ensure the seedlings are distributed to schools, religious centers, communities, and major roadsides to foster a cleaner and greener environment.
Governor Yusuf also highlighted ongoing efforts under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) program which has reclaimed over 250,000 hectares of land to build resilience against desertification.
The initiative has received broad support from community leaders, government officials and environmental advocates.
Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo mentioned the project’s importance not only for Kano but for neighboring states affected by desert encroachment.
The Commissioner for Environment Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim stated that all seedlings distributed were locally grown and represented a significant increase over previous years underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
During the event, Governor Yusuf also recognized two notable Kano indigenes Engr. Muntari Sulaiman and Dr. Abdulhamid Bala Sarauniya, for their outstanding contributions to environmental conservation.
This large-scale tree planting campaign is part of Kano State’s broader strategy to combat desertification, safeguard natural resources, and promote the well-being of its residents for generations to come.
