Kebbi Health Centre Serving Over 8,000 Residents Now in Ruins MonITng Raises Alarm

A civic accountability group, MonITng, has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating state of Gayi Primary Health Centre in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, calling on Governor Nasir Idris to urgently intervene and upgrade the facility.

In a series of posts shared via social media, the organization described its recent visit to the centre as “heartbreaking and unacceptable.”

“We visited Gayi Primary Health Centre in Kalgo, the only health facility serving over five surrounding communities with more than 8,000 residents. What we met on the ground was heartbreaking,” the group stated.

While the exterior of the building appeared recently painted, the group said this cosmetic effort merely concealed a much deeper crisis.

“Though the exterior looks freshly painted, the interior tells a different story broken windows, empty rooms, and a complete lack of hospital beds.”

Patients, including women and children, are reportedly forced to lie on mats placed directly on the floor during treatment. The group also highlighted a lack of essential infrastructure and resources.

“There is no electricity, no clean water, no medical equipment, and no full-time medical personnel. Staff are forced to sleep in offices due to the absence of accommodation.”

Despite these harsh conditions, the centre continues to receive daily visits from mothers and children seeking basic healthcare.

“This centre is meant to offer hope and healing, but in its current state, it cannot meet even the most basic medical needs of the people,” the statement read.
“It’s not just an infrastructure problem it’s a governance failure.”

MonITng urged the Kebbi State Government to go beyond surface-level renovations and make real investments in the primary healthcare sector.

“Painting the walls is not healthcare. The people need functional beds, qualified staff, essential drugs, reliable electricity, clean water, and most importantly, dignity.”

The group tagged the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, and other key stakeholders in its call for immediate action.
