KEDCO Begins 10MW Solar Power Offtake from Haske Plant, Boosting Renewable Energy Supply
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has commenced the offtake of 10 Megawatts (MW) of solar power from the Haske Solar Plant, situated within the Challawa Industrial Cluster in Kano.
This milestone follows the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement with Haske Solar Company Ltd, a project developed by the Federal Government through the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and overseen by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated. The 10 MW plant, commissioned in January 2023, now contributes clean energy to the KEDCO network.
KEDCO’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta, and Executive Director of Portfolio Management, Mr. Tajudeen Datti Ahmed, signed the agreement in Abuja. The ceremony was witnessed by Yusuf Yahaya, Managing Director of Future Energies Africa.
Dr. Jimeta described the partnership as a key step toward delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to customers. “By integrating solar power into our supply mix, we are improving network efficiency while contributing to Nigeria’s energy transition goals,” he said.
He added that the 10 MW of solar energy is being evacuated through KEDCO’s Abattoir Injection Substation, supplying industrial customers in the Challawa cluster via NBC 11KV and Ceramic 11KV feeders. The initiative is expected to bolster energy security, support local industries, and safeguard jobs across Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States.
Yusuf Yahaya of Future Energies Africa emphasized the company’s commitment to providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity. “Through innovative solutions and partnerships, we aim to lead the way in renewable energy adoption and sustainable development,” he said.
KEDCO lauded the Federal Government, NSIA, Ministry of Finance, and Kano State Government for the successful implementation of the Haske Solar Plant, Nigeria’s largest grid-connected solar facility. The company also confirmed that additional renewable energy projects are under review as part of its broader energy diversification strategy, reinforcing its commitment to uninterrupted power supply for customers.
