Kenneth Okonkwo Denies Betraying Peter Obi, Says He Remained 100% Loyal During Campaign

Veteran actor and former Labour Party chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, has spoken out to dispel claims of betrayal towards Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Okonkwo firmly stated that he acted with full loyalty during his time in the party and never consulted with any rival political figure throughout the campaign.

“When I worked for him [Peter Obi], I never consulted any politician,” Okonkwo declared. “I am making this a public statement I was 100% loyal. I never spoke to any other political party.”

The Nollywood star-turned-politician emphasized that even after parting ways with Peter Obi and the Labour Party, he did so publicly and respectfully, making it clear he would no longer serve as Obi’s spokesperson or representative.

“When I left, I informed the world that I would no longer speak on behalf of that person,” he added. “Anyone accusing me of betrayal is only projecting their own character, not mine.”

However, in July 2024, Okonkwo announced his exit from the Labour Party, citing internal party issues and ideological differences. Though he maintained a tone of respect in his exit, his decision was met with criticism from some supporters, sparking accusations that he had “abandoned” or “betrayed” the party’s ideals and Obi’s movement.

In his televised statement, Okonkwo sought to put the record straight, describing the betrayal narrative as unfounded and malicious. He explained that he had no secret affiliations or negotiations with opposition figures and made a clean and honourable exit once he chose to step away.

“They don’t even understand what betrayal means,” he noted. “If you claim I betrayed someone after I openly declared my exit, then it says more about your own integrity than mine.”
