La Liga President Vows to Halt Club World Cup Over Expanded Format Concerns

La Liga president Javier Tebas has launched a fierce campaign against the ongoing Club World Cup, promising to take all necessary steps both legal and institutional to prevent future editions of the tournament, which he says threatens the integrity of domestic leagues.

Tebas voiced his disapproval during a press conference on Tuesday, where he strongly criticized the tournament’s expansion to a 32-team format.

According to him, the revamped structure disrupts national league calendars and undermines the traditional football ecosystem.

Despite the competition reaching its quarter-final stage and featuring top-tier clubs like Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid each earning a minimum of $15 million Tebas insisted the financial allure does not justify the harm to local leagues.

He reiterated his commitment to challenging the tournament’s future legally and through football’s governing bodies.

FIFA’s expanded Club World Cup has sparked debate globally, with supporters praising its commercial potential and critics warning of schedule congestion and club fatigue.

Tebas has long been one of its most vocal opponents, arguing that national competitions should not be sacrificed for global events.

“I will do everything in my power to ensure that the Club World Cup is never held again,” Tebas declared. “This format is a direct threat to the viability and rhythm of our domestic competitions.”
