Labour Party Rules Out Peter Obi for 2027, Says He Was “Only Lucky” in 2023.
The Labour Party (LP) has stated that former presidential candidate Peter Obi will not secure the party’s ticket for the 2027 general elections.
This position was articulated by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, during an interview on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Monday. He stressed that the Labour Party could continue to thrive without Obi.
According to Arabambi, the momentum the party enjoyed in 2023 stemmed largely from the #EndSARS movement and widespread dissatisfaction with the Buhari administration, rather than Obi’s personal influence.
“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi said.
His comments follow recent controversy over Obi’s call during the August by-elections for his supporters to vote for African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates. While Obi defended his position, explaining that the Labour Party did not field candidates in several constituencies, the LP dismissed his statements as false and anti-party.
Arabambi also accused the LP’s Acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu of siding with Obi against the party’s interests, warning that disciplinary action would follow.
“Our plan is to get rid of these elements people who are just an epitome of political extremism. We don’t want them in Labour Party. Now that they said they are going to ADC, we wish them well,” he added.
