Labour Party Slams Peter Obi as ‘Desperate Uber Politician’ for Urging Supporters to Vote ADC in Bye-Elections
The Labour Party (LP) has launched a scathing attack on its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of undermining the party’s electoral chances by directing supporters to vote for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the August 16, 2025 bye-elections.
In a statement signed by National Chairman Barrister Julius Abure, LP described Obi’s directive as “misleading, mischievous, and delusional,” alleging that he has been at the center of the internal crisis crippling the party.
Abure accused Obi of attempting to “strangle” the party while publicly feigning concern for its future. He branded Obi “an irony and a paradox in the Nigerian political space” and “an Uber politician” who avoids taking firm political stands.
According to LP, Obi alongside Abia State Governor Alex Otti convened an “illegal stakeholders meeting” in Umuahia in September 2024, triggering the leadership tussle that has split the party. The statement further alleged that Obi co-funded the crisis, even leading protests to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against his own party.
“His desperation to control the soul of the party has made him go haywire,” Abure said. “A man that received so much goodwill from the party leadership but turned around to pay them with evil.”
The party maintained that its candidates remain on the ballot for the bye-elections and urged members to remain focused.
Obi’s appeal to his supporters known as the “Obidient” movement to vote ADC came after INEC excluded LP from the polls, citing unresolved leadership disputes. The elections will take place across 16 states, covering two senatorial seats, five House of Representatives seats, and nine state assembly seats.
The LP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the 2023 general elections, with rival factions battling for control through multiple court cases a conflict that has repeatedly hampered its participation in key elections.
