Lady sparks debate: Sponges cause skin infection, not cleanliness

A Nigerian lady has sparked debate online after cautioning people against the use of sponges during bathing, insisting that soap and water alone are enough for proper hygiene.

In a viral video circulating on social media, the woman strongly warned that scrubbing the body with a sponge may cause more harm than good.

Holding a sponge in her hand, she admitted it might be too late for her to advise but stressed the need to share the dangers she has observed.

She explained that constant scrubbing creates “micro tears” on the skin tiny cuts that open the body up to infections. According to her, these cuts allow micro-organisms to penetrate easily, leading to different forms of skin infection.

The lady further noted that the skin naturally produces oils that protect the body, and excessive use of sponges strips away these oils. This, she said, often leaves people itchy and uncomfortable after bathing.

While she acknowledged that those who perform hard or dirty jobs may need a sponge for thorough cleansing, she advised that people with lighter duties, especially office workers, should avoid sponges entirely.

Her comments have continued to stir mixed reactions online, as Nigerians debate whether sponges are truly harmful or an essential part of personal hygiene.
