Lagos Coroner Recommends Criminal Prosecution of Nurse Over Mohbad’s Death for Medical Negligence
The Lagos State Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu has formally recommended the criminal prosecution of Feyisayo Ogedengbe, an auxiliary nurse, for her role in the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. Magistrate C.A. Shotobi ruled that Ogedengbe acted with gross negligence by administering an injection to the late singer without a prescription from a licensed medical doctor, deeming her conduct both unlawful and professionally negligent. However, the court ruled out homicide or foul play in the case.
The magistrate invoked Section 29 of the Lagos State Coroner Laws, urging the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to initiate appropriate legal action against Ogedengbe for unlawful medical practice and gross negligence.
This development follows a thorough police investigation that identified Ogedengbe as the prime suspect. The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Idowu Owohunwa, disclosed that a special 13-man investigative team interviewed her and other key witnesses. The investigation revealed that Ogedengbe administered several injections, including a tetanus shot, to Mohbad without proper medical oversight. Experts concluded that her actions likely triggered adverse reactions that contributed directly to the singer’s death.
The investigation also involved the detention and questioning of five individuals linked to the events leading to Mohbad’s demise, including prominent figures such as music artist Naira Marley and promoter Sam Larry. However, the court acquitted these individuals, finding no evidence to implicate them in the singer’s death.
Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, after sustaining injuries during an altercation. The police exhumed his body for autopsy, and the report is still pending. Meanwhile, Mohbad’s father has filed an appeal challenging a court decision that upheld the DPP’s legal advice absolving Naira Marley and others of involvement.
This case has drawn widespread public attention, highlighting issues of medical negligence and the responsibilities of healthcare providers. The Lagos Coroner’s Court’s recommendation marks a significant step toward holding those responsible accountable under the law. The Director of Public Prosecutions is expected to act on this recommendation promptly to ensure justice is served.
