Lagos Launches Schools Sports Festival to Boost Student Development and Discover Talent

The maiden edition of the Lagos State Schools Sports Festival kicked off on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Yaba College of Technology, marking the beginning of a new era in the state’s education system.

Organized by the Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MBSE), the event aims to provide a platform for students to showcase their talents and sportsmanship through athletics and field events.

The festival featured a marchpast by schools from the six education districts, track and field events, athletics for junior and senior categories, long jump, high jump, and calisthenics performed by Queen’s College.

Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, described the event as a momentous occasion that reflects the school’s commitment to holistic education, encompassing intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development.

He emphasized the crucial role of sports and physical education in students’ overall development.

Dr. Hakeem Shittu, Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), praised the students’ performances and assured that necessary measures would be implemented to monitor their progress, helping them grow and reach their full potential in sports.

He stressed the importance of balancing education with sports, ensuring students are well-equipped to utilize their abilities effectively, and urged parents to support government efforts by encouraging their children.

Students who excelled in various activities were recognized with medals and trophies for their outstanding performances.
