Lagos Police Announce Statewide Movement Restriction Ahead of Council Elections

The Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of movement across the state on Saturday, July 12, 2025, in preparation for the upcoming local government elections.

The announcement, made on Wednesday, confirmed that vehicular movement will be restricted from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the day of the election. The police explained that the measure is part of efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for the smooth conduct of the electoral process.

According to the statement issued by the Command, certain categories of individuals such as essential workers and election officials will be exempted from the restriction. However, the police urged members of the public to comply fully with the directive and remain indoors during the stated hours.

The development comes amid growing concerns from political stakeholders over the preparedness and transparency of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

The African Action Congress (AAC), in a statement released on Tuesday by its State Secretary, Jegede Kehinde, accused LASIEC of undermining the electoral process. The party alleged that the commission had disenfranchised candidates and failed to uphold democratic principles, transparency, and inclusiveness.

Kehinde criticized LASIEC’s chairman and board members, describing their handling of the elections as biased and lacking credibility.

“LASIEC should understand that local government elections are not a joke. We are looking for a government that truly impacts people at the grassroots,” Kehinde said.

He further accused the commission of operating with partisanship and undue influence, warning that the integrity of the electoral process must be safeguarded if democracy is to be preserved at the grassroots level.

As election day approaches, residents are advised to plan their movements accordingly and cooperate with security operatives to avoid disruptions and ensure a peaceful and credible electoral exercise.
