Lagos Police Arrest 18 After Protest Over Power Outage Turns Violent

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 18 individuals following a violent disruption at Tejuosho Market, which began as a protest over a power outage but quickly escalated into an attack on public property.

According to the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when a group of individuals exploited the protest to commit acts of violence, targeting both market-goers and a commercial bank.

“Mobile Police personnel on guard at the bank successfully repelled the initial assault, preventing the rioters from gaining entry. Additional forces, including Anti-Riot Squads and tactical units, were promptly deployed to contain the situation,” Oluseyi stated.

The arrested individuals are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend any other participants in the attack.

The Lagos State Police Command has assured residents that normalcy has been fully restored and urged them to carry on with their daily activities without fear.

The police reiterated that violent attacks on law enforcement personnel and destruction of property will not be tolerated. Citizens were advised to respect police officers as they carry out their duty to protect lives and property.

This latest arrest follows earlier security operations in the state, including the apprehension of two suspected cultists with firearms in Akoka.

Recent clashes between cult groups in Lagos have claimed at least five lives, highlighting the ongoing challenges authorities face in maintaining public safety.
