Lionel Messi Likely to Retire After 2026 World Cup – Emmanuel Petit Predicts

Former France and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has predicted that Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentina captain, will hang up his boots after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with EscapistMagazine (via GOAL), Petit ruled out any potential return to Barcelona for Messi, despite ongoing speculation about a loan move. According to him, the emergence of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has already filled the void left by Messi at the Spanish club.

“Messi has been linked with a loan return to Barcelona, but Lamine Yamal isn’t going to sit on the bench,” Petit said.
“Messi could play as a No. 10, but we all know he doesn’t cover much ground anymore. Can Barcelona dominate the midfield with that setup? I don’t think so.”

Petit further expressed his support for Messi’s final run on the international stage:

“I wish him all the best in making it to the 2026 World Cup. I believe that will be his farewell to professional football.”

Messi, who left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain after financial constraints blocked a contract renewal, currently plays for Inter Miami in the MLS. The 2026 World Cup, to be jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, could mark the end of an era for one of football’s greatest icons.
