Liverpool to Honour Late Diogo Jota During Return Match at Preston

Liverpool Football Club will pay tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, during their first pre-season friendly this Sunday against Preston North End, following the tragic deaths of the Portuguese duo in a car crash.

Jota and Silva lost their lives in a fatal accident on July 3 in northern Spain, just 11 days after Jota’s wedding to his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso.

In honour of the fallen star, Liverpool’s return to pre-season training was postponed until Tuesday. However, the club has confirmed the Preston match will proceed, accompanied by a series of commemorative gestures.

Before kick-off at 14:00 GMT, Liverpool’s iconic anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will be played, followed by a minute’s silence.

Preston will also lay a wreath in front of the away fans, and digital tributes will be displayed on pitchside screens and stadium boards. Players from both teams will wear black armbands in mourning.

Jota’s funeral took place last Saturday and was attended by Liverpool manager Arne Slot, team captain Virgil van Dijk, and several first-team players.

The club and fans worldwide continue to mourn the loss of a beloved player whose legacy will be remembered both on and off the pitch.
