Makinde Raises LAUTECH Security Guards’ Pay from ₦18,800 to ₦80,000 After Emotional Appeal
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has put smiles on the faces of 67 security guards at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital after approving a major salary increase for them.
The intervention came during an event at the hospital when one of the guards, given a chance to speak, broke down in tears as he narrated their struggles.
He revealed that despite staging a protest back in June 2021, no solution had been provided to their plight.
“On the 1st of June, 2021, we raised placards, asking you to help us. We’ve been here before Otunba Alao Akala and before the work of this place was completed. We are not staff but indigenes of Oyo State. Please help us, we are suffering. I have a family and three children; my age is fast running out. Please help us, Your Excellency,” the security guard pleaded.
Governor Makinde, visibly shocked, asked how much they earned. The guard revealed they received just ₦18,800 monthly. A hospital representative clarified that the workers were outsourced and the firm responsible was paid ₦27,000 per guard.
Moved by their plight, Governor Makinde immediately announced a solution.
“I can solve the problem right away by saying that all 67 should be converted directly to ad-hoc workers, and you will get ₦80,000 every month from the first of October,” he declared.
The announcement sparked jubilation among the guards and the crowd, as their salaries were more than quadrupled in one moment of relief.
The governor’s gesture has since been widely praised as a humane response to the cries of ordinary workers who had endured years of hardship.
