“Marriage is beautiful, we have to ignore bad marriages” – Iyanya

Nigerian artist, Iyanya, recently expressed his opinion on the influence of social media on people’s perception of marriage. He advised individuals in Nigeria to overlook the negativity of “bad marriages” portrayed on social media and instead focus on building their own healthy relationships.

During an episode of the kingz corner podcast, Iyanya highlighted the significance of maintaining privacy within a marital union. He encouraged couples, whether intending to get married or already married, to refrain from broadcasting their personal matters on social media. In doing so, he believed they could protect their relationship from unwanted opinions and interference, thereby reducing the potential for further harm.

The singer emphasized the importance of having intimate discussions about marital issues within the confines of the relationship. According to Iyanya, seeking validation or portraying a picture-perfect image of love and happiness on social media does not necessarily reflect a successful marriage.

Iyanya urged couples to prioritize working on their relationships behind closed doors rather than seeking external validation or attention through social media platforms.

In essence, Iyanya’s advice underlines the need for Nigerians to detach their perception of marriage from the unrealistic standards often depicted on social media. He encourages couples to focus their energy on fostering a strong and loving partnership privately, away from the pressures and judgments of online platforms.

He said:

“Marriage is beautiful. We have to learn to ignore bad marriages. And not allow those bad marriages to define our expectations of marriage. Don’t let a bad marriage make you think you can’t have a good marriage.

“I believe that if you find someone who loves you and is willing to sacrifice, it [marriage] is beautiful. I know people who are happily married, not that they don’t have challenges but I’ve watched them protect what they have. Some people who are happily married are not on Instagram; they don’t post valuable moments. They keep it, they cherish it.

“Social media is two words; social and media. Is your marriage social? If you want to be entertaining people with your marriage, if you guys now have small issues, you can’t even make up again”.
