Mbappe Strike Lifts Real Madrid Past Nine-Man Getafe to Reclaim La Liga Summit
Real Madrid edged past a stubborn Getafe side with a hard-earned 1-0 victory in a heated Madrid derby at the Coliseum on Sunday night, reclaiming the top spot in La Liga.
Manager Xabi Alonso made a bold lineup decision, leaving out Vinicius Junior and Arda Guler from the starting eleven while deploying Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes alongside Kylian Mbappe in attack. Mbappe came close early on, but his effort was denied by Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.
Getafe nearly shocked the visitors when Alex Sancris’ thunderous volley whistled just wide of Thibaut Courtois’ post, and both sides went into the break without a goal.
The introduction of Vinicius and Guler in the second half proved decisive. Moments after coming on, Vinicius was caught in an altercation that saw Allan Nyom sent off for an off-the-ball foul. Shortly after, Guler’s clever assist found Mbappe, who slotted home the winner with a composed finish.
Getafe’s misery deepened when Alex received a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Vinicius, leaving the hosts with nine men. Despite their disadvantage, they nearly equalized in stoppage time, but Courtois pulled off a crucial save to deny Abu Kamara.
The narrow win pushes Real Madrid two points clear of arch-rivals Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table, solidifying their title ambitions as the season intensifies.
