Mob Kills NSCDC Officer in Jigawa After Mistaking Him for Armed Robber During Market Operation

Tragedy struck in Jigawa State on Sunday, August 4, 2025, when a mob at Shuwarin Market lynched an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) after mistaking him for an armed robber.

The victim, identified as Superintendent Corps (SC) Bashir Adamu Jibrin, was on official duty and in plain clothes when the incident occurred around 1:20 p.m.

According to eyewitnesses, SC Jibrin, who was armed with a service pistol but not in uniform, approached a suspect during an arrest operation. The individual allegedly raised a false alarm, screaming “armed robber,” which immediately drew the attention of nearby traders and buyers.

“The crowd, unaware that he was a law enforcement officer, descended on him and beat him severely before security operatives from the Shuwarin Division could intervene,” a source revealed.

Jibrin was rushed to the General Hospital in Dutse by the Divisional Police Officer and his team but was declared dead on arrival by attending doctors. His service pistol was later recovered from the scene.

Efforts to get a comment from the Jigawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Lawan Shisu Adam, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the risks faced by plain-clothed officers during undercover operations and the dangers of mob justice in Nigeria.
