Mother and Three Children Drown During Cleansing Ritual at Mamelodi Dam, South Africa
A tragic incident unfolded on August 3, 2025, at Delfie Quarry Dam in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, where a mother and three of her children drowned while performing a traditional cleansing ritual.
The victims include a 51-year-old mother, her 36-year-old daughter, and two sons in their twenties. Eyewitnesses report that a seven-year-old girl, present but not participating in the ritual, witnessed the heartbreaking event.
According to reports, the young girl ran home to alert relatives, prompting emergency services to respond swiftly. The bodies of the mother and daughter were recovered shortly after arrival, while search efforts for the two sons were suspended overnight due to the dam’s depth.
Police divers resumed their search the following morning and successfully retrieved the remaining bodies after a 40-minute dive. Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the recovery operation and stated that an inquest docket has been opened by Boschkop police as investigations continue.
The local community remains shocked, with many residents gathering at the dam to pay respects and call for increased safety measures during traditional rituals. Counseling services have been arranged for the surviving child, who is now under the care of relatives.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic event.
