Muhammed Babangida Declines Tinubu’s Appointment as Bank of Agriculture Chairman, Cites Personal, Professional Reasons

Muhammed Babangida, son of former Nigerian military president General Ibrahim Babangida, has formally declined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent appointment naming him Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture.

The appointment, which was announced on July 18, 2025, was turned down in a statement issued by Babangida on Monday, July 21. He attributed his decision to “personal and professional reasons,” stressing his inability to commit the full attention and dedication the role demands.

Despite stepping away from the high-profile position, Babangida expressed unwavering support for the Tinubu administration and its goals for national progress.

“I remain fully committed to the vision of a prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria under your leadership,” Babangida said. “I continue to hold your administration in the highest regard and stand ready to support national development in other ways.”

The announcement comes as the federal government continues efforts to strengthen leadership within strategic financial institutions.

Babangida’s withdrawal, while unexpected, is seen by some analysts as a principled move prioritizing competence and capacity over political convenience.
