Mystery Surrounds Death of Ex-SDP Governorship Candidate Bamidele Akingboye at 60

The political circle in Ondo State and beyond has been thrown into shock following the death of Bamidele Akingboye, former governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who passed away at age 60 under controversial circumstances.

Akingboye reportedly died last Wednesday at his Victoria Garden City (VGC) residence in Lagos. His Personal Assistant and Media Adviser, Oyeniyi Iwakun, confirmed the sad news in a statement, describing him as “a man of integrity, a philanthropist, and a visionary leader.” He added that details of the burial would be released soon.

What should have been a quiet moment of mourning has instead sparked public uproar, as SaharaReporters quoted sources alleging that his death may not have been natural. According to the report, one of his wives allegedly pushed him off a balcony, resulting in fatal injuries. Graphic images circulating online appeared to show bruises and deep cuts on his head and neck.

Beyond politics, Akingboye was a prominent businessman, serving as CEO of Benshore Maritime, Clog Oil Systems, and President of WeAfrica Group. He emerged as one of the top contenders in the 2024 Ondo State governorship race, though the election was ultimately won by APC’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Police authorities have since confirmed that investigations are underway to uncover the actual cause of death. Civil society organizations and rights activists are also demanding transparency, insisting that security agencies must resist any attempt to cover up the case.
