Nasarawa Governor Laments Low Participation in Voter Registration Exercise

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has expressed concern over the low turnout of residents participating in the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across the state.

Speaking on Tuesday Governor Sule decried the sluggish response of eligible voters to the registration process emphasizing the critical importance of voter registration as a fundamental pillar of democracy. He urged residents to seize the opportunity to register update their voter information, and ensure their active participation in upcoming elections.

The governor highlighted that the CVR exercise, which commenced in August 2025, is aimed at expanding the voter base and enhancing citizens’ ability to influence governance through their votes. Noting that the exercise is free and accessible through both online and physical registration centers spread across the 13 local government areas of Nasarawa, he appealed to the populace to overcome apathy.

Independent National Electoral Commission officials also confirmed mobilization efforts, including voter education campaigns, are ongoing to encourage wider participation.

The appointment of additional staff and deployment of technological solutions to ease registration procedures were presented as part of INEC’s commitment to a smooth and transparent process.

Governor Sule’s remarks come amid nationwide concerns about voter apathy and the urgency of boosting democratic engagement ahead of forthcoming elections in Nigeria.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated that only eligible Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above can register, and those already registered should update their information or replace lost, damaged, or transferred Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

Security measures and operational hours from 9am to 3pm are in place to facilitate the exercises at designated centers.

The governor’s call to action reinforces the vital role of every eligible citizen in strengthening democracy through active electoral participation.
