Nationwide Protest Planned for August 1 Over Food Crisis, Joblessness, and Governance Under Tinubu
The Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM) has declared a nationwide protest for August 1, 2025, citing mass hunger, soaring unemployment, and what it calls “bandit capitalism” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Operating under the theme “No Food. No Jobs. No Future,” the NPFM says the protest will take place simultaneously across major Nigerian cities. The group aims to rally citizens against rising economic hardship, insecurity, and a lack of opportunities that it claims are deepening poverty and threatening national stability.
A viral flyer promoting the protest boldly states, “WE DON TAYA TO CARRY SHIT,” using Nigerian Pidgin to express the growing frustration of everyday Nigerians with governance failures and worsening living conditions.
The planned protest comes amid deepening social unrest. In August 2024, similar demonstrations rocked several states, including Kano and Yobe, as angry citizens protested hunger and poor governance. In some areas, the protests turned violent, prompting 24-hour curfews, the burning of vehicles, and widespread looting of public and private property.
As inflation continues to soar and basic commodities become unaffordable, civil society groups have increasingly accused the federal government of failing to implement people-centered policies.
The planned #EndBadGovernance protest borrows from past social justice movements, including the #EndSARS demonstrations, and signals renewed momentum for civic action ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We rise on August 1st, 2025 not just for ourselves but for every Nigerian suffering in silence,” the flyer reads.
“Enough is enough. We cannot continue to suffer under a government that enriches the few while millions go hungry. This protest is about reclaiming our future,” said one NPFM spokesperson.
