Niger Govt Warns IBBU Students Could Face Charges Over Protest

Following the tragic killing of Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level student of IBB University, Lapai, the Niger State Government has warned that students who carried dangerous objects during protests could have faced prosecution if the new penal code had already been signed into law.

The warning was issued by Commissioner Hamidu Mu’azu Jantabo during an emergency security meeting. He condemned the use of sticks and weapons during the protest and stressed the need for peaceful demonstrations going forward.

Jantabo also slammed landlords for charging outrageous rent (₦200k–₦400k) for unsafe lodges with no gates or security. He called for legal reforms to ensure proper safety standards in student housing.

Over 200 trained local vigilantes will soon be deployed to secure hostels and communities around the university.

Meanwhile, the university declared June 24 & 25 as lecture-free days to mourn the deceased student.

This comes just hours after another armed robbery at a student lodge where five iPhones and a motorcycle were stolen.
