Lagos, January 30, 2025 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is continuing its vital role in addressing Nigeria’s humanitarian and protection crisis with the launch of its 2024-2025 Crisis Response Plan.
This comprehensive plan aims to enhance support for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable communities, focusing on improving data collection on displacement and strengthening partnerships with local authorities.
The IOM’s Crisis Response Plan outlines key objectives designed to provide immediate humanitarian assistance while promoting the resilience of displaced populations and host communities.
The plan highlights the need for $101 million in funding to effectively implement its initiatives, with approximately $18.3 million already confirmed, leaving a significant funding gap of $82.7 million.
Enhanced Data Collection: Improving tracking and monitoring of displacement to better inform humanitarian responses. Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with national and local authorities, UN agencies, and civil society organizations to ensure a coordinated approach to addressing the needs of affected populations. Mental Health Support: Providing mental health services to communities impacted by insecurity and displacement, particularly in regions like Katsina State.
The IOM’s response will focus on the most vulnerable groups affected by conflict, including child-headed households, single-headed families, persons with disabilities, and survivors of gender-based violence. The organization aims to tailor its support for IDPs living in camps and host communities facing severe conditions due to ongoing violence.
The IOM emphasizes a transition towards comprehensive, evidence-based solutions for displacement in Nigeria.
By fostering social cohesion and enhancing local capacities, the organization seeks to integrate displaced populations into broader development efforts. This approach aligns with the IOM Nigeria Strategic Plan for 2023-2027.
As Nigeria grapples with ongoing humanitarian challenges exacerbated by violence and displacement, the IOM’s 2024-2025 Crisis Response Plan represents a critical step towards addressing urgent needs and promoting long-term recovery.
With continued support from international partners and stakeholders, there is hope for improved conditions for vulnerable communities across Nigeria. The success of this plan will depend on securing the necessary funding and effectively implementing collaborative strategies that prioritize the well-being of those affected by crisis.
