Nigeria Commences Phase 7 of Mass Trials for Terror Suspects in Kainji

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced Phase 7 of the Kainji Mass Trials, aimed at prosecuting individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism and related offences.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), which operates under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

According to the National Coordinator of NCTC, Major General Adamu Laka, the latest phase of trials marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism and violent extremism. He noted that the legal proceedings reflect the government’s commitment to justice, the rule of law, and due process.

“This phase of mass trials is a demonstration of our resolve to ensure justice is served through lawful and transparent judicial mechanisms,” Laka said.

He praised the collaborative efforts between the judiciary, law enforcement agencies, the legal community, and international partners, describing it as a unified front in addressing terrorism.

Highlighting recent improvements in Nigeria’s criminal justice system, Laka noted that the country’s progress in prosecuting terrorism-related offences has helped address critical concerns raised by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), especially regarding Nigeria’s ability to manage such complex cases.

“These advancements have significantly supported Nigeria’s broader efforts to be removed from the FATF Grey List,” he added.

Major General Laka also extended appreciation to the Federal Government, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Federal High Court Justices for their professionalism and continued dedication to justice.

Representing the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Director of Public Prosecution, Mohammed Babadoko, commended the coordinated approach adopted by ONSA and all stakeholders involved.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring justice is delivered fairly both to victims and accused persons while upholding human rights and the rule of law.

The trials are being conducted at the Wawa Military Cantonment in Kainji, Niger State, where suspects have been held in lawful detention pending prosecution.

The Kainji Mass Trials form part of a broader national strategy to combat terrorism, promote accountability, and enhance public confidence in the criminal justice system.
