Nigeria Honors Former President Muhammadu Buhari with State Burial and National Tributes
The late former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, in London after a prolonged illness, is scheduled for a state burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.
His remains will arrive in Nigeria for interment in the compound of his Daura residence, following Islamic rites, with dignitaries and top government officials expected to attend in tribute to his national service.
The Federal Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to honor Buhari’s memory while President Bola Tinubu has ordered a seven-day national mourning period. As part of the commemoration, flags across the country are being flown at half-staff.
An emergency session of the Federal Executive Council is convening to further commemorate Buhari’s tenure and substantial contributions to Nigeria’s governance and anti-corruption efforts.
Buhari a former military ruler and two-term president, leaves a complex legacy marked by his determined anti-corruption campaign and firm stance on national security.
