Nigeria Sports Commission Unveils ₦78 Billion Plan to Revolutionize Sports Development
As of January 14, 2025, the newly formed Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) is set to implement a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing sports development across the country.
Under the Renewed Hope Agenda led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the commission has proposed a substantial budget of ₦78 billion to improve sports facilities and support grassroots programs.
The NSC’s initiatives are part of a broader strategy to reposition Nigeria’s sports ecosystem from a competition-driven model to one focused on development and value addition. The proposed budget represents a significant increase from previous allocations, reflecting the government’s commitment to prioritizing sports as a tool for national growth.
Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, emphasized that this initiative is not merely about infrastructure investment but about redefining sports as a national asset.
The Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy is a tool for unity, cultural promotion, and economic growth, he stated. The commission aims to uplift millions of youth and communities through enhanced sports programs.
The budget will facilitate several critical projects, including.
Infrastructure Development: Renovation and upgrade of existing sports facilities, construction of new mini-stadiums, and community sports complexes.
Grassroots Sports Initiatives: Launching programs to develop grassroots sports in schools and local communities, alongside talent identification and development programs.
Anti-Doping Laboratory: Establishment of a world-class anti-doping laboratory, positioning Nigeria as a regional hub for anti-doping efforts.
High-Performance Center: Construction and equipping of a high-performance training center in Abuja to support elite athletes.
In addition to facility improvements, the budget includes dedicated funding for national team preparations for various international competitions such as the World Cup, AFCON qualifiers, and the Olympics. This approach aims to ensure that funds are readily available when teams qualify for events, addressing past issues of financial constraints.
As the NSC embarks on implementing these initiatives, there is cautious optimism among stakeholders regarding the potential impact on Nigerian sports. With a clear focus on grassroots development and athlete welfare, the commission seeks to create a sustainable sporting environment that fosters talent and encourages participation at all levels.
The upcoming year promises to be transformative for Nigerian sports as these plans take shape under the renewed commitment from both the government and sporting bodies.
