Nigeria to Compete in 10 Sports at Inaugural African School Games in Algeria
Nigeria is set to participate in the inaugural African School Games scheduled to take place in Algeria from July 26 to August 5, 2025. The multi-sport event will bring together young athletes from across the continent to compete in a variety of disciplines.
The Nigerian contingent will compete in 10 sports, including athletics, basketball, football, swimming, volleyball, table tennis, taekwondo, chess, badminton, and handball.
The event aims to promote youth sports development and foster unity among African nations through friendly competition.
Officials from the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) have confirmed the country’s participation and announced that a team of over 150 athletes and officials will represent Nigeria. The athletes have undergone rigorous training and selection processes in preparation for the games.
The African School Games present a great opportunity for our young athletes to showcase their talents on a continental stage said NSSF President Mrs. Funke Adeyemi. We are confident that Nigeria will perform admirably and bring home medals in several sports.
The African School Games, organized by the African Union in partnership with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), is designed to encourage school sports and identify future stars in African athletics.
The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 26 in Algiers, Algeria’s capital, with competitions running through August 5.
Nigeria’s athletes are expected to compete fiercely across all events, aiming to establish the country as a dominant force in youth sports on the continent.
The Nigerian government and private sponsors have pledged support to ensure the team’s success and safe participation in the games.
