Nigerian Activist Dele Farotimi Blasts New Petroleum Tax, Urges Public Resistance.

Nigerian lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has ignited discussions online after strongly criticizing the government’s recently introduced petroleum tax, calling it an “unjust system” aimed at burdening citizens.

In a viral video circulating on social media, Farotimi expressed frustration over the passive attitude of Nigerians who often comply quietly with unfair policies. He argued that the time has come to question and actively resist such measures.

Farotimi highlighted the history of the petroleum tax, explaining that it was initially established during the fuel subsidy era, with revenues intended for the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to fund road projects. He alleged that instead of being used for their intended purpose, these funds were misappropriated over the years.

“When that law was made, there was a fuel subsidy. That money was meant to go to FERMA for the maintenance of federal roads, but they’ve just been taking the money. Now, the subsidy is gone, and petrol prices have skyrocketed,” he said.

He also directly called on fellow activists and public figures to join the resistance, naming individuals such as Yele Sowore and Bello Galadanchi, and urging everyone in the public sphere who identifies as an activist to take a stand.

“We must resist this fuel taxation. We cannot remain silent while policies like this continue to exploit citizens,” Farotimi asserted.

The clip has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing solidarity with his stance, while others questioned whether public resistance could lead to tangible change.
