Nigerian Army Brokers Peace Accord Between Warring Fulani and Tiv Communities in Taraba
In a strategic move to promote peace and stability, the Nigerian Army has successfully facilitated a peace accord between Fulani and Tiv community leaders in Gassol Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State.
The reconciliation dialogue was held on June 23, 2025, at the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo and was led by Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Gassol LGA Chairman Hon. Abubakar Usman, traditional leaders, elders, and security agencies. The dialogue addressed long-standing tensions and violent clashes between the communities.
Brig. Gen. Uwa emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence, warning against vigilantism and urging all parties to support law enforcement with useful intelligence. “Only a peaceful society can witness security, growth, and prosperity,” he stated.
After extensive deliberation, both sides agreed to foster open communication, refrain from protecting criminals within their ranks, and collaborate with authorities to prevent future conflicts. The session ended with the formal signing of a peace agreement.
Chairman Usman praised the Army’s non-kinetic approach, commending the troops of 6 Brigade for prioritizing dialogue over force. He described the peace initiative as a turning point in resolving communal tensions in the region.
The peace pact is seen as a milestone in the Army’s broader effort to use diplomacy and community engagement as tools for conflict resolution.
