Nigerian Cleric Faces Online Criticism After Remarks About Menstruation

Popular Nigerian cleric Pastor Femi Lazarus is trending online after comments about women’s menstrual cycles sparked widespread criticism.

In a viral sermon clip, Lazarus suggested that women’s mood swings during menstruation are not due to their periods but their personalities, saying:

“You are not the first woman to see your period, so your menstruation is not the problem. I have never seen anywhere in the Bible any woman complain about menstrual pain. You are simply not a peaceful person.”

Social media users quickly condemned the remarks, calling them insensitive and dismissive. Many argued that the statements trivialize a natural biological process and fail to recognize the real experiences associated with menstruation.

One woman commented, “You are sick… Preach Jesus, not gender!” while another added, “This is why women are fed up with male religious leaders speaking on female issues.”

Critics insist that religious leaders should focus on their spiritual duties rather than making uninformed statements on women’s health. Meanwhile, some defenders argue that Lazarus’ words are being misinterpreted.

The controversy continues to divide opinions online, highlighting ongoing debates about gender sensitivity and religious authority in Nigeria.
