Nigerian Government Launches New Resources to Keep Citizens Safe Amid Persistent Heatwave

ABUJA, July 22, 2025 — In response to the ongoing surge in temperatures across Nigeria, the federal government has launched new information resources aimed at keeping citizens well-informed and prepared as extreme heat conditions persist nationwide.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier issued warnings about a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures in several states reaching between 38°C and 42°C raising concerns about heat stress and related health risks.

Cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and northern towns including Kebbi and Yola have experienced some of the highest recorded temperatures, exacerbating discomfort and potential health hazards for vulnerable populations.

To mitigate these risks the government is rolling out a comprehensive communication strategy comprising real-time weather updates, heat safety advisories and public awareness campaigns distributed via multiple platforms including radio television, social media and community outreach programs.

These initiatives are designed to encourage preventive actions such as adequate hydration, use of light clothing avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours and seeking cooler environments.

Health experts have also been engaged to educate the public on recognizing symptoms of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and sunstroke which have become more prevalent due to the heatwave.

The government’s move aligns with calls from climate and health specialists for a national Heat Action Plan to better coordinate heat mitigation efforts, protect vulnerable groups and strengthen healthcare responses.

The initiative aims not only to reduce immediate heat-related health impacts but also to raise awareness about the longer-term implications of climate change in Nigeria which has witnessed increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves year after year.

NiMet continues to monitor weather conditions closely and urges Nigerians to stay informed take recommended precautions and support efforts to adapt to the growing challenges posed by extreme heat.
