Nigerian Man Commemorates 4th Anniversary of Father and Siblings Who Passed Away After Eating Suya in Abia State.
Four years after a devastating family tragedy, Chinedu Victor Ogba has taken to social media to remember his late father and siblings, who died after eating suya in Umuahia, Abia State.
On August 25, 2021, Chinedu’s father, Sunday Okechukwu Ogba, alongside his teenage children, Chigozirim (17) and Eberechi (14), died in Umueze Umuakanu, Umuahia North, after consuming roasted meat popularly known as suya. The incident also claimed the lives of four extended family members present that evening.
According to reports at the time, the victims began vomiting shortly after eating the delicacy and died soon after, leaving the community in shock.
The heartbreaking event left only two survivors: Chinedu’s mother, Mrs. Jessy Chinonyerem Ogba, and his sister, Ijeoma Blessing, who were rushed to the hospital and managed to recover.
Marking the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, Chinedu poured out his emotions in a heartfelt Facebook tribute:
“Today marks four years since I lost my beloved dad and my dear siblings in an unexpected tragedy that changed my life forever. Not a day passes without thoughts of you all. I choose today to honor your lives, the love you gave, the laughter we shared, and the bond we will always carry. Rest on, Dad. Rest on, my dear siblings. Your memories remain my treasure, and I will continue to live in a way that makes you proud.”
The post, which quickly gained attention online, resonated with many Nigerians who sympathized with his pain and reflected on the fragility of life.
The tragedy remains one of the most disturbing food-related incidents in Abia State in recent years, sparking renewed conversations about food safety, hygiene practices, and public health awareness.
