Nigerian Man Labels Big Brother Naija as ‘Haram’, Plans to Petition for Permanent Ban

A Nigerian man has sparked heated debate on social media after declaring plans to file a petition demanding a permanent ban on the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija, labeling it “haram” a term meaning forbidden under Islamic law.

The controversial statement was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by user @Arewa_Source shortly after the launch of the show’s 10th season, which features 29 housemates 15 female and 14 male contestants.

He wrote:
“Big Brother Naija is Haram and I will be sending in a petition to get it permanently banned in Nigeria.”

His post ignited a flurry of mixed reactions online, with many users criticizing the move as misplaced focus amid Nigeria’s ongoing socio-economic challenges.

One user, @NubiSouth, responded:
“I don’t give a shit about Big Brother but have you sent petitions to your northern government to stop terrorism. Nonsense.”

Another, @BecksYusuf86774, stated:
“Misplaced priority. Bandits and Boko Haram are committing genocide in the North, families are starving, but your problem is Big Brother Naija.”

However, not all responses were hostile. Some users argued that while they personally don’t watch the show, banning it based on religious views would be unjustified in a secular nation.

User @LukeObhokhan added:
“I don’t watch it, but I won’t support you to write a petition just because it is Haram. It’s not a must-watch show. Some people earn a living from it.”

Others simply dismissed the man’s effort altogether, suggesting he restrict the show in his own home rather than impose his beliefs on others.

As the debate rages on, Big Brother Naija Season 10 continues to draw widespread attention, blending entertainment with ongoing discussions about culture, morality, and personal freedoms in Nigeria.
