Nigerian Music Legend Akiin Shuga Dies at 50

Nigerian music icon Akinloye Tofowomo, famously known as Akiin Shuga, has passed away at the age of 50. He died on October 30, 2025, in New Brunswick, Canada. The musician was the founder and leader of the Shuga Band, widely celebrated for his contributions to Nigeria’s live music scene.

In a statement, his family described him as a trailblazer whose influence spanned generations. “Akinloye Tofowomo was more than a musician; he embodied rhythm, culture, and the essence of performance,” they said, highlighting his over 30 years of dedication to music and live entertainment.

Born on January 6, 1975, in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, Akiin Shuga overcame the challenges of polio, which he contracted at age five, to become one of Nigeria’s most accomplished performers and entertainment entrepreneurs.

He founded Shuga Band in 1998, growing it into a 14-member ensemble renowned for energetic performances at weddings, corporate events, and official functions.

Through Shuga Entertainment, he promoted professionalism, creativity, and excellence in the Nigerian music industry.

He also served as the founding president of the Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), advocating for musicians’ welfare and rights.

Tributes from fans and colleagues continue to pour in, celebrating his legacy of inspiration, mentorship, and entertainment. His family requested privacy during mourning but assured that memorial service details would be shared in due course.

“Akinloye Tofowomo’s rhythm may have ended, but his music will live on forever,” the family concluded.
