Nigerian Opposition Forms Coalition to Challenge APC Ahead of 2027 Elections
Prominent opposition leaders in Nigeria have officially formed a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu and his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections. The coalition named the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), brings together key figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor Peter Obi, both of whom were runners-up in the 2023 presidential race.
The alliance also includes former lawmakers, ex-governors, and influential political figures who previously belonged to the ruling party but have since defected.
David Mark, former Senate President and interim chair of the coalition, emphasized the coalition’s mission to prevent Nigeria from evolving into a one-party state.
he coalition will stop Nigeria from becoming a one-party state Mark said during the launch event in Abuja.
The formation of the ADC comes amid growing concerns over the consolidation of power by the ruling APC with accusations that President Tinubu’s administration has used state resources to persuade opposition politicians to defect.
While Tinubu denies these allegations, defections by federal lawmakers and state governors to the APC have intensified political tensions.
The opposition coalition echoes the successful alliance that ended the 16-year dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
Many Nigerians remain dissatisfied with the current administration’s handling of the economy, security challenges, and the fallout from unpopular reforms such as subsidy removals and currency adjustments that have fueled inflation.
Cheta Nwanze, a geopolitical analyst at SBM Intelligence, highlighted the importance of unity among opposition parties.
You cannot remove a sitting government if the opposition is disunited he noted, underscoring the coalition’s strategic significance.
The ADC coalition also faces the challenge of countering defections and maintaining cohesion as it seeks to present a credible alternative to the ruling party.
Key figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi have pledged to focus on addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues, including insecurity, economic hardship, and democratic governance.
The coalition’s formation signals an intensifying political battle as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, with opposition leaders rallying to offer voters a united front against the incumbent administration.
