Nigerian Police Charge Omoyele Sowore with Inciting Mutiny Over Police Welfare Protest

Abuja, Nigeria The Nigerian Police Force has officially charged human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) 2023 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore with inciting mutiny following his role in leading a protest by police officers demanding improved welfare, pensions and working conditions.

Sowore was detained for over 48 hours by the Nigeria Police Force after responding to an invitation from the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit.

The police cited credible allegations against him including forgery, cyberstalking and other criminal offenses. These charges are currently under active investigation and he has been formally informed of the accusations.

The Force asserts the arrest and detention were conducted in full compliance with legal provisions respecting constitutional safeguards and due process.

During his detention Sowore released videos alleging police brutality, including that officers broke his hand and denied him proper medical attention.

However the Nigerian Police have strongly denied these claims, labeling them as false and misleading narratives aimed at tarnishing the police’s reputation.

They clarified that Sowore was granted bail within the constitutionally mandated 48-hour period and was expected to appear before a competent court to respond to the charges.

The activist, who has been vocal on issues of governance and security, including police welfare, is accused of inciting police officers to protest unlawfully which the police classify as mutiny.

Sowore’s supporters and human rights organizations have condemned the arrest, describing the charges as politically motivated efforts to silence dissent.

Legal counsel for Sowore has criticized the police for alleged inhumane treatment during his custody and called for transparency and fair judicial process.

Amnesty International and other advocacy groups have also demanded his immediate release and dismissal of all politically charged allegations.

Sowore was released on bail but remains under investigation and will face court proceedings in the coming days.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between security forces and activists in Nigeria, especially around demands for better welfare and accountability.

The Nigerian Police continue to maintain that their actions adhere to law and due process asserting that Sowore’s case will be handled transparently through the judicial system as the country navigates complex security and political challenges.
