Nigerian Police Return AI-Powered Ray-Ban Glasses Stolen from Activist Omoyele Sowore During Protest

The Nigerian Police Force has returned the AI-enabled Ray-Ban smart glasses belonging to human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.

The glasses were previously stolen during a peaceful protest by retired police officers at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Sowore confirmed the recovery on Tuesday via social media, revealing that the police acknowledged the theft of the glasses.

The incident occurred on July 21, 2025, when a rogue police cameraman, identified as Aku Victor Chiemerie, allegedly took the glasses during the demonstration demanding improved welfare and retirement benefits for Nigerian police officers.

The smart glasses, embedded with artificial intelligence and containing sensitive personal data, became the subject of public outcry after video footage surfaced showing the cameraman absconding with them.

Sowore had filed formal complaints with both the Force Criminal Investigation Department and the Asokoro Divisional Police Station.

Advocacy groups like the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) called for a transparent investigation, pressing authorities to hold the culprit accountable.

Despite attempts by the suspect to deactivate social media accounts and evade scrutiny, Sowore vowed to continue the pursuit of justice until the thief faces full accountability.

This recovery marks a significant step toward addressing concerns about police conduct during protests and protecting citizens’ rights.
