Nigerian Senate to Hold Special Session to Honour Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari
The Nigerian Senate is set to hold a special session on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 to honor the late former President Muhammadu Buhari reflecting on his legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s national development.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the session during Tuesday’s plenary emphasizing that the tribute will provide an opportunity to celebrate Buhari’s impact following his death on July 13 in London after a prolonged illness.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was buried last week in Daura, Katsina State. His burial ceremony attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria and abroad.
President Bola Tinubu previously led a special Federal Executive Council session honoring Buhari, commending him for leading with restraint, dignity and bearing the burdens of leadership without complaint.
In a related development, the Senate has officially debunked recent viral social media claims that it has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria. Senate President Akpabio clarified that although over 42 proposals on state creation have been received by the Senate Committee on Constitution Review none has completed the rigorous legislative process to gain approval.
He urged communities and the public to await official announcements from the National Assembly and disregard misinformation circulating online.
The special session tomorrow will thus not only commemorate Buhari’s life and service but also serve to reaffirm the Senate’s role in maintaining legislative transparency and order.
