Nigerian Student Shocked as German Professor Abandons Lecture to Help Her Find Class
A Nigerian student studying in Germany has shared a heartwarming experience that has gone viral on social media after a professor stopped her lecture midway to personally help the student locate her classroom.
The student, who posted the story on TikTok under the username @big_sosap, said she was confused and unable to find her way to a new class. After asking several students who couldn’t give her clear directions, someone suggested she ask a professor nearby a suggestion she initially found unbelievable.
“I was like, ‘Ask professor?’ Because in Nigeria, you can’t just approach a professor like that,” she said, recalling her hesitation.
To her surprise, the female professor not only responded kindly but left her students in the middle of a lecture to walk with her around the building until they found the right classroom.
“This woman left her class and followed me around. I couldn’t believe it. I was like, so professors are actually human beings too? Nigerian professors, you people are not gods o!” she joked.
The student added that the professor later introduced herself by her first name, Petra, and insisted that her students address her the same way a level of humility the Nigerian student found both shocking and inspiring.
Reflecting on the experience, she said it made her rethink the culture of hierarchy and fear often found in Nigerian universities.
“I realized I need to unlearn a lot of things from Nigeria,” she said. “People are just people, no matter their title.”
The story has sparked massive reactions online, with many Nigerians commending the professor’s humility and calling for a similar attitude of respect and approachability within the Nigerian academic system.
