Nigerian Youth and Activists Protest Rising Inflation Demand Government Action
Waves of demonstrations have broken out in major cities across Nigeria as activists and young people take to the streets, protesting skyrocketing inflation and the soaring cost of daily living.
The mass demonstrations, reminiscent of the landmark #EndSARS protests in 2020 reflect growing frustration over widespread hardship and government policies.
Protesters, many carrying placards and chanting for change are demanding urgent interventions to secure basic necessities such as food, fuel and healthcare. “We are not just protesting for ourselves, but for every Nigerian who is struggling to buy bread or pay for transport,” said one youth organizer at a rally in Lagos.
The country’s annual inflation rate has reached levels not seen in decades, with many households reporting a sharp decline in their purchasing power. “Prices of everything have doubled or tripled. Families can barely eat. We want the government to listen to our cries,” another demonstrator in Abuja told reporters.
Authorities have appealed for calm amid mounting tensions emphasizing the need to maintain peace during the protests. Several state governors have echoed these calls acknowledging the hardships faced by citizens while urging protesters not to disrupt public order.
President Bola Tinubu addressed the nation Thursday night, asking Nigerians for patience as his administration unveils a package of emergency economic measures designed to tame inflation and stabilize the economy.
“We understand the pain and anger of the people,” Tinubu said in his statement, “and we are committed to introducing strong policies to restore hope and wellbeing for all Nigerians.”
Despite warnings from security agencies, civil society leaders say the demonstrations highlight deep-rooted discontent.
Many protest organizers are pushing for not only short-term relief but also deep-seated government reforms to improve accountability and economic management.
As demonstrations continue to swell, many are watching closely to see how authorities handle the unrest and whether the government can deliver tangible relief to a nation in crisis.
