Nigerians Condemn Bokku Mart for Labeling Igbos as “Cheaters” in Viral Video

Bokku Mart, a popular Lagos-based retail chain, is facing nationwide backlash after a controversial advertisement appeared online, reportedly containing a tribal slur against the Igbo people.

In the viral video, a female presenter showcased various products sold at the mart, including sachets of garri and beans. However, viewers were angered by a remark in which she allegedly suggested that Igbos are cheaters:

“You mean I can get beans and garri Ijebu at Bokku without any Omo Igbo cheating me?”

The video, originally posted by Bokku Mart, has since been deleted, but screenshots and clips circulated widely on social media, igniting a heated debate.

Social media users expressed outrage, accusing the advertisement of perpetuating negative stereotypes and unfairly labeling Igbos as dishonest.

  • @afrisagacity commented: “The Bokku Mart media team created an ad labeling Igbos as ‘cheaters.’ This is a clear attempt to exploit tribal bigotry for attention and is completely unacceptable.”
  • @GeneralSnow_ added: “Bokku is owned by Adewale Adeyemi. Until he apologizes for this attack on Igbos, they remain cancelled. Profiling an entire ethnic group as cheats is disgraceful.”

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about corporate responsibility, advertising ethics, and the dangers of using tribal stereotypes for marketing purposes. Many Nigerians are calling for official apologies and accountability from Bokku Mart’s management.
