Nigerians Revive #JusticeForOchanya Movement, Demand Action Seven Years After Girl’s Death
Seven years after Ochanya Ogbanje’s tragic death, Nigerians have reignited the #JusticeForOchanya movement, demanding justice and accountability for the 13-year-old Benue girl who suffered prolonged sexual abuse.
Ochanya’s heartbreaking story first captured national attention in October 2018 after reports revealed that she had been repeatedly abused by a university lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor Ogbuja.
The alleged abuse, which lasted for years, led to severe health complications that ultimately claimed her life.
Despite years of public outrage, the legal proceedings have dragged on without a clear resolution, sparking renewed anger among citizens and human rights advocates.
This week, hashtags like #JusticeForOchanya and #EndChildAbuse began trending again across X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook, as Nigerians called for the government and judiciary to act decisively.
Several celebrities, women’s rights groups, and legal advocates have joined the movement, urging authorities to conclude the case and strengthen child protection laws to prevent similar tragedies.
Many online users expressed frustration over the perceived failure of the justice system, insisting that Ochanya’s case should not be forgotten until justice is fully served.
As the campaign gains momentum once more, activists are hopeful that the renewed attention will finally push the case to a fair and conclusive end ensuring that Ochanya’s death is not in vain.
